Children's Rights Activity Book
Having Fun With Rights
In addition to the My Body is Precious Book, the Special Envoy for Women and Children, with support from UNICEF Belize, launched the publication, “Having Fun with Rights: A Children’s Rights Activity Book” in February 2016. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Belize ratified in 1990 and is one of the major human rights instruments for children globally, was used as the book’s main resource.
The book targets children who are between the ages of 8-11 years old, and is designed to make the teaching of children's rights more interactive and enjoyable. Activities based on situations that may occur within homes, at school or in social settings are used to make the material relatable, while encouraging children to think critically.
There is also a significant focus on the responsibilities that accompany each of the rights to foster positive behavioral habits and promote child-appropriate responsibilities, particularly within households.
Significant to the development of Having Fun with Rights were workshops held with students of Hummingbird Elementary and All Saints Primary School in May 2015 to gather feedback on the content and appearance of the book.
The launch of the children’s rights activity book was done in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, The National Committee For Families and Children and UNICEF. A number of primary schools participated as both spectators and performers at the launch.
After the launch, a meet and greet was held where the students had the opportunity to speak with Mrs. Simplis Barrow and have her autograph their activity book.
